The week before your puppy comes home is the right time to get set up, not the day of. Here’s what actually matters to have ready.
Puppy-Proof First
Maltipoos are small, curious, and quick to chew. Before pickup day:
- Get down to puppy-eye-level and remove loose cords, small objects, and anything chewable within reach
- Block off stairs or high furniture if your puppy is very young — falls are a real risk at this size
- Secure trash cans and anything toxic (certain plants, cleaning products, human foods like chocolate and grapes)
What to Buy Before Pickup Day
- Crate — sized for a small breed; look for one with a divider so it can grow with the puppy
- Puppy-specific food — ask your breeder exactly what the puppy has been eating, and get the same brand to start, to avoid stomach upset from a sudden switch
- Food and water bowls — shallow, small-breed sized
- Collar, harness, and a short leash
- Puppy pads or a designated potty area, especially for the first few weeks
- A few appropriate chew toys — teething starts early
- A comfortable bed or blanket with a familiar scent, if your breeder can provide one from the litter
Set Up a Quiet Space
Designate one small area as your puppy’s home base for the first few days — a crate or pen in a low-traffic room works well. Coming into an entire house all at once can be overwhelming for a puppy leaving their littermates for the first time.
Line Up a Vet Before You Need One
Have a vet appointment scheduled within the first few days of bringing your puppy home, even if they seem perfectly healthy. This continues the vet care your breeder started and catches anything worth addressing early.
Plan the First 24 Hours
Keep the first day calm and low-key — limit visitors, keep a consistent feeding schedule, and expect some whining or restlessness the first night as your puppy adjusts to being away from their littermates. This is normal and typically settles within a few days.
