“Home-raised” and “family breeder” are two of the most overused phrases in this industry — which means the label alone doesn’t tell you much. Here’s how to actually tell the difference between a puppy mill and a genuine home breeder, regardless of what a website claims.
What Defines a Puppy Mill
A puppy mill is a commercial breeding operation that prioritizes volume over the health and wellbeing of the animals. Common characteristics include:
- Multiple breeds and litters available at once, year-round
- Little to no health testing on parent dogs
- Puppies kept in cages or kennels rather than a home environment
- Sellers unwilling or unable to show where puppies are actually raised
- Minimal socialization before puppies go home
- Pressure to decide or pay quickly, with little room for questions
What Defines a Genuine Home Breeder
- A limited number of litters at a time, from health-screened parents
- Puppies raised inside an actual home, with daily handling and exposure to household life
- Willingness to answer detailed questions, show the environment, or arrange a visit
- Written health guarantees and complete vet records
- No pressure to rush a decision
Red Flags Worth Taking Seriously
- Price significantly below market rate for the breed and area
- No ability to see where the puppy was raised, even via video call
- Vague or evasive answers about parent health testing
- Multiple breeds and constant “new litters” advertised simultaneously
- Reviews or testimonials that feel generic or can’t be verified
It’s Not Always Obvious from a Website
A polished website doesn’t guarantee a responsible breeder, and a simple one doesn’t mean the opposite. The questions you ask, and how directly they’re answered, matter more than presentation. See our guide on exactly what to ask →
